The Cheeky Chappie

Max Miller was one of Britain’s top comedians – funny, flamboyant, ebullient, risqué. In his one man show Dave Sealey tells the story of Max’s rise to stardom, from his early days in seaside concert parties in Brighton to star performances in West End theatres and in Royal Command Performances.

Dave Sealey brought Max Miller to life in front of an enthusiastic audience

Along the way Dave performs snippets of some of Max’s contemporaries including Rob Wilton, Jimmy James, Gracie Fields and George Formby All big names, but none of them bigger than the one who boasted, ‘Miller’s the name, lady’, the ‘Cheeky Chappie, the highest paid of them all.

In the second half of the show, dressed like Max in his trademark gaudy floral suit, plus fours, kipper tie and white trilby hat and with Max’s white and blue books in his hands, Dave tells jokes and performs some of the comic songs that audiences loved.

Dave played Max Miller to perfection and brought the true magic of the music halls alive for the audience who were all in stitches with Max’s good clean fun.

Max would scold his audience, saying, ‘…you’re the sort of people who get me a bad name! LISTEN…listen, listen….

Jack and Jill went up the hill
Just like two cock linnets
Jill came down with half a crown
She wasn’t up there two min…..,
ERE!

A lifelong music hall performer himself, Dave's enthralling one man show portrays how this street urchin from Brighton became Britain’s highest paid comedy star - as well as a little of the quiet unassuming man Max was beneath the make up and the gaudy suits.

Dave not only caught the great Max on stage and had the audience laughing along to the saucy jokes that made audiences laugh over seventy years ago but he caught the man behind the flowery suit and the cheeky chatter

With songs and laughs a-plenty, this show is as saucy as a seaside postcard from Brighton pier itself

It was a pity there wasn’t a full house for the Max Miller story in the Hall on Friday night - it was beautifully acted by David Sealey, and thoroughly enjoyed by those who came.
